Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I train my salespeople?

As often as possible.   Training is not a one time affair.  It has too be done often and regularly.  Apart from the 3 or 4 days per year, consider a hour or two every week just before the week is out or maybe once a month or quarter.  It is totally need based.

Ideally who should be the sales trainer?

If its product training, then your internal product specialist would do a great job.  However, it has to do about selling skills it is best to get a certified expert who has experience in selling similar products in similar markets.  Its good if you have someone with these qualifications in your company, however it would have greater impact if you hired an external expert.

Does training actually work?

Yes, if it has the full support of the supervisor and management.  No, if you expect training alone to bring all the change you want.  Class room training must be blended with systems and processes as well other methods of learning and assessment.  The trainee must be encouraged and supported to put his new skills into practice and helped to adapt the new skills quickly.

What if I invest money, train my salespeople and they leave? Isn't that such a waste?

What if you do not your salespeople and they continue working for you? At best you could expect mediocre or even sub standard performance and growth.  Don't expect anything outstanding.  Investment in training is like any other investment in business.  You should invest in training, however, if required,  put in a couple of riders or proviso's to protect your investment.

Can anybody become a trainer?

Yes, but with sufficient training.  Having knowledge or the zeal to train is not enough.  One should have gone through a Train the Trainer course to be a good trainer.
